About:How to Travel to China without a Visa

LHR > Beijing Capital > Sapporo Chi

If I have a 19 hour lay over in Beijing am I allowed to leave the airport, book a hotel and explore Beijing visa free or do I need to sort something?

Yes, you are eligible for the 24-hour visa-free transit and you can apply for a temporary stay permit to get out of the airport. By the way, it is better to book the hotel in advance.
