About:72-Hour Visa-Free Transit

Hong Kong to Shanghai

I will be flying to Hong Kong on Feb 22 and departing to Shanghai on Feb 24 then leaving Shanghai 26. As a US citizen I know I do not need a visa for Hong Kong and since I'm going to Shanghai for less than 72 hours, I am assuming I do not need a visa for China in general?

If your itinerary is HK -Shanghai - USA, then you don't need any visa as you are eligible for the 144-hour visa-free transit. However, if your itinerary is HK - Shanghai - HK, then you have to get a Chinese visa in advance.

No, you don't need any visa, and it is just eligible for the 144-hour visa-free transit.
