UK Citizen/passport layover in China

Hello, I'm going London-Beijing (PKX Daxing International) and the next day from Beijing (PEK) - HK - Sydney.
Do i need a visa for the overnight layover or is it covered by 24hr visa free?

Similarly 3 wks later returning back to China: Manila - Beijing (PEK), staying 2 nights in Beijing area only, and flying Beijing (PKX) to London. Do we need a visa for this or can we use 144hr visa free?

Your first itinerary can be covered by 24-hour visa-free transit while the second one is eligible for the 144-hour visa-free transit.
