About:24-Hour Visa-Free Transit

Pakistani national transiting in Shanghai from London to Tokyo

Hello,

I am traveling from London to Tokyo with a 3-hour stop-over in Shanghai.

Do I need a transit visa? Some people say Pakistanis are exempt from the 24 transit visa but I do not plan to leave the airport.

Ali, your itinerary is definitely eligible for 24 hour visa free transit and you do not need any kind of visa as far as China is concerned. You will remain airside and will just make a relatively short transit between the two flights.

I need to self-transfer to collect baggage. Will I be able to get the 24 hour transit visa on arrival and exit the airport to get my luggage and then check in again? Also I am confused why so many people say Pakistan is not eligible for a transit visa.

It is a 24-hour visa-free transit. Yes, you are covered by the visa-free transit. As I know, Pakistan passport holders only need visa to transfer in Xiamen and Urumqi airport.
