Matt, you cannot enter mainland China from Hong Kong by taking a ferry or train or bus, but only by taking a flight directly from Hong Kong to Guangzhou in order to enjoy 144 hour visa free transit that is valid for entire Guangdong province. However, you can return to, for example Macau by ferry from Shekou port in Shenzhen, but you will have to have a ferry ticket, bought through TurboJet ferry website, in advance and to have it as a printout in your hands. Also, you will have to take exactly that ferry you have bought your tickets for.
So, an itinerary:
Hong Kong (flight) - Guangzhou (ferry) - Macau
Is eligible for 144 hour visa free transit. Also, you should use correct terminology because it is a visa free transit, so there is no a visa of any kind involved.
