About:24-Hour Visa-Free Transit

Flight requires me to collect baggage in TFU

I have a short layover in TFU Chengdu but as per Sichuan Airlines collecting baggage and re checking is a requirement. To re check my baggage will I need to apply for this 24 hr visa free transit? Thank you :) Also I am on Aus passport

You are eligible for the 24-hour visa-free transit and you don't need any visa.

Do you need to apply for this or is automatically granted at border control ? As the only reason I am passing border control is to collect baggage to re check it?

Pat, you did not mention your itinerary, so it is hard for us to speak based on many missing information. However, if your itinerary is eligible like, for example:

Seoul - Chengdu - Bangkok

Then you are eligible for 24 hour visa free transit scheme and you do not need any kind of visa.

Since you will have to collect your luggage and make new check-in, you will apply, immediately upon landing in Chengdu, for a temporary entry permit at 24/144 hour visa free transit counter. This is simple application where you will present your flight itinerary and it is done for free. Shortly after you are granted a permit, you will exit the airside, collect your luggage and perform new check-in.

Basically, this is the entire procedure you should do. You will be fine, but again, based on our imagination of your itinerary.
