Ramesh, your itinerary is definitely eligible for 240 hour visa free transit under the assumption that you are a UK or a citizen of one of 55 eligible countries. You are allowed to depart from Hong Kong West Kowloon station toward mainland China when traveling on 240 hour visa free transit, but since both immigration authorities, Hong Kong and mainland Chinese are co-located at the same premises of this station you should be there roughly 120 minutes ahead of your train departure. When you are done with Hong Kong exit section you will fill out mainland China arrival card, perform fingerprinting, approach 24/240 hour visa free transit to obtain a temporary entry permit and here you will present your exit ticket from China (flight ticket from Chengdu to Colombo). Please, keep in mind that you will be also asked to present that ticket by Hong Kong exit immigration.
When you are done with the above mentioned formalities, you will head to the immigration and then to the gate for your train to Shenzhen. Between Shenzhen you can take a train or a plane, in reality whatever you want. You have properly understood the system and you are ready to go. Have a nice visit to China.
