Separate flights - 1) return Melbourne to Guangzhou, then 2) Guangzhou to Tokyo

My parents will be joining us in Japan. But it's cheaper to purchase a return flight from Melbourne to Guangzhou, then a separate return flight from Guangzhou to Tokyo. But for them to arrive in Tokyo around the same time as us, they will need to stay overnight at Guangzhou airport. They will then stay in China for 2 weeks after Japan. Does this mean they have to apply for a multi entry visa?

Australian passport holders are eligible for 24/144-hour visa free transit, so no visa is needed from your parents for the route Melbourne - Guangzhou - Tokyo for overnight stay. Upon landing, they can even go to the immigration counter to apply for a temporary stay permit to have a rest in the hotel outside the airport.

To stay in China for 2 weeks, a visa will be needed and a single-entry will be fine. However, when you transit in Guangzhou on the way from Australia to Japan, do not let the immigration staff stamp your entry. Just say clearly you save it for next trip. If you still worry about it, just apply for a double-entry for a worry-free trip.
