issue with separate tickets?

Are there any issues to expect when it comes to making use of the visa-free transit on separate tickets? We plan to travel from Hongkong to Beijing on one ticket and we'll be leaving Beijing on a separate ticket back to Germany. While I'm pretty sure that we meet all the official requirements, I was especially wondering if there might be problems with the airline taking me from HK to Beijing as our trip back to Germany will be on - as said - a separate ticket of another airline. I just want to avoid anything like a denied boarding if they consider that I don't meet the Chinese entry requirements.

There are no issues at all. Separate tickets and unrelated airlines have always been fine and accepted for 144 hour visa free transit. It is the nature of itinerary that matters and the details you are mentioning do not. By the way, your itinerary is eligible and you are good to go. You should just take care that your itinerary from Beijing to Germany does not have a landing in Hong Kong.

Thank you for your answer! After checking our options to travel between Hong Kong and Beijing, we are considering to take the sleeper train (Z98) instead of traveling by plane. When traveling on this particular train (and not the high speed trains where Chinese immigration takes place in HK), we should be able to make use of the visa-free transit in Beijing (our return flight departs from PEK airport) as immigration will take place at Beijing West Station, right?

As I know, the train Z98 is still out of service. If it is resumed, you can use it to enter Beijing relying on the 144-hour visa-free transit and yes, the immigration will be done in Beijing West Railway Station upon arrival.
