About:72-Hour Visa-Free Transit

Does flight to Guangzhou from UK need to be direct to qualify for 144 visa free pass

I'm looking to book a flight from Manchester UK to Guangzhou but does this have to be direct? Cheapest flight involves landing in Beijing then taking a 2nd flight to Guangzhou with a 3 hour stop over. Transit will be by train to Hong Kong 3 days later. Is 144hr visa free pass allowed?

Of course it has to be direct. Visa free transit scheme is very simple and it requires one detail:

The immediate point before and after your Chinese destination (just one) have to be in two different countries or eligible territories (eligible territories: Hong Kong, Taiwan and Macau).

Simply speaking, if you want to enjoy 144 hour visa free transit in Guangzhou (in reality entire Guangdong province), you have to arrive there from one and depart to a third country. You cannot use another Chinese area for that purpose.
