You are definitely allowed to apply and obtain Shenzhen 5 days visa. This is not a problem. Current problem is in congested visa offices on overland border crossings, Luohu included. Having this detail in mind, I suggest you to take a ferry from Hong Kong to Shekou port in Shenzhen, but you should just have in mind the opening hours of Shekou visa office: 9:00 - 13:00 & 14:30 - 16:30. Also, have in mind that the price for a Shenzhen VOA for UK citizens is 314 CNY.
When you enter Shenzhen, you are limited to stay and move just within Shenzhen city boundaries and you are not allowed to travel to Zhongshan and Zhuhai. In order to enter Zhuhai, you will have to exit from Shenzhen to Macau and then enter Zhuhai on new, Zhuhai VOA.
In reality, I would suggest you to rely on 144 hour visa free transit by taking a flight from Hong Kong to Guangzhou and then to exit from Shenzhen (Shekou port) to Macau by ferry. Like this, you will be in transit and you would be able to travel within the entire Guangdong province without obstacles. Anyway, you would be required to book a ferry ticket in advance, to print it out and to take exactly that ferry to Macau that you have bought your ticket in advance.
