Transit by train from Kunming to Urumqi on 144 hour exemption?

I'm a UK citizen, want to return to Europe by train after visiting SE Asia. If I enter China from Laos/Vietnam to Kunming and leave via Urumqi to Kazakhstan in less than 6 days can the 144 hour visa exemption be used?
