About:Visa on Arrival

Travelling back and forth between Hong Kong and Shenzhen

Hello,
I am an Irish citizen who will be travelling out of mainland China into Hong Kong within the next week. However, since my girlfriend is living in Shenzhen, I was wondering what would be the limit on the amount of times I can travel back and forth between Hong Kong and Shenzhen within a limited amount of time using the VOA option? E.g. Spending 5 days a week in Shenzhen, then returning to Hong Kong for the weekend, and then returning to Shenzhen the next Monday. Would this be easily refused after a couple of times of this?

This is not the problem at all. It is, however, true that you would be refused after the third application because that would be considered an exaggeration and you would be required to obtain a Chinese visa in advance. I am practically 100% certain that two applications will be perfectly acceptable, the thrid one with, OK, but do not do that until the next year and the fourth one would be almost certainly a rejection.

By the way, based on recent feedback, you are advised not to use any overland border crossing for obtaining a Shenzhen VOA, but Shekou port in Shenzhen. Please, make yourself a favor and use a direct ferry from Hong Kong to Shekou because the visa offices at the usual border crossing experience huge amount of application and literally hours to process them. So take a ferry and obtain a VOA there. However, have in mind the opening hours of Shekou visa office: 9:00 - 13:00 & 14:30 - 16:30.

Ok thank you very much for your very detailed reply!
However, checking the prices for different nationalities at the port, I didn't see one for Ireland. Do you know whether or not I can avail of this visa on arrival as an Irish citizen?
Also, are there any specific requirements for travelling to Shenzhen and availing of this VOA?

Irish citizens are definitely eligible for a Shenzhen VOA and the price is 168 CNY.

There are no any special requirements, but you could be asked certain questions like where will you have your accommodation, what will you do there and similar. I would say, the questions that are usually asked at some border crossing in some different countries.
