About:72-Hour Visa-Free Transit

Are both Beijing and Shanghai possible on 144 hour stay?

U.S. citizen and my flights are USA - Seoul 3 days - Beijing 4 days - Tokyo 4days - USA . Is that fine for the 144 hour visa free travel? If I added flying from Beijing to Shanghai for 2 days and either leave from Shanghai to Tokyo or come back to Beijing to leave for Tokyo is the 144 hour visa free stay still possible or does the Shanghai stop invalidate?

You are allowed to enjoy 144 hour visa free transit in one only transit area. Unfortunately, Beijing and Shanghai are located in two separate transit areas, so a visit to Shanghai from Beijing would make your entire itinerary disqualified.

By the way, your original itinerary, without Shanghai added to it, is perfectly eligible for 144 hour visa free transit in Beijing transit area that consist of Beijing, Tianjin and entire Hebei province.

If you visit Shanghai visa free, then you would have to add some additional flights like:

Seoul - Beijing (144 h) - Tokyo - Shanghai (144 h) - Seoul

It is essential to understand that only the immediate points before and after your mainland Chinese destination matter and they have to be in two different, eligible geographical entities, i.e. countries or Chinese provinces: Hong Kong, Taiwan and Macau that act as third countries in this regard.
