No, unfortunately, this is not possible. Zhonghshan is outside of the zone covered by both Shenzhen and/or Zhuhai VOAs.
You best option is to fly from Australia to either Guangzhou or Shenzhen.
After this, you can depart for Hong Kong by ferry from Nansha port or Shekou port in Shenzhen. However, you will have to buy a ferry ticket from Nansha or Shekou ports to Hong Kong in advance through CKS (Chu Kong Passenger Transport) website. You will print out that ticket and you will have it with you in hard copy.
Like this, making a transit itinerary:
Australia - Guangzhou (or Shenzhen) - Hong Kong
You become eligible for 144 hour visa free transit in entire Guangdong province, so you can perfectly attend a family wedding in Zhongshan.
Please, have in mind that you will have to travel to Hong Kong by exactly that ferry you have bought your ticket for.
