About:China Visa on Arrival

A family [4 member are with australian passport one with Bangaldes passport]

Hi, I am transiting through Guangzhou to Australia with my family. All of my family members have an Aus passport except me.
Wondering if we all can enter China with a VOA. Or do I (with a Bangladesh passport) need to organize a visa prior to the boarding plan, which I do not have time to do now?

Halim, it is important to clear one detail.

You mention a tranist through Guangzhou and that is fine. Now, it is important that you clarify your itinerary or better to say a flight route with your point before Guangzhou, after Gunagzhou and the length of time you plan to spend in Guangzhou.

If your itinerary has just one stop in mainland China, as you mention Guangzhou, and the time from your scheduled arrival in Guangzhou, until your scheduled departure from Guangzhou is less than 24 hours, you do not need any kind of visa because you will be covered by 24 hour visa free transit in Guangzhou.

However, if your total transit time is longer than 24 hours, your Australian family members will be covered by 144 hour visa free transit, but you will have to obtain a transit visa in advance because Bangladesh citizens are not eligible for 144 hour visa free transit.

Now, you can inform us about your itinerary with your flight stops as well as the scheduled times and we will be able to tell you precisely about your possible options.

So, there is no a visa on arrival in Guangzhou, but passengers rely on 24 and 144 hour visa free transit.

Thank you so much. My transit time is less than 24 hours.
From your discussion, I understand that, even though I have a Bangladeshi passport and my transit time is less than 24 hours, I can still enter main land China to explore the city with other family members [who have Australian passports].

Actually, you do not need a visa to perform your transit since your entire transit time will be less than 24 hours, but it is just to the Chinese immigration authorities if they will allow you, together with your Australian family members, to exit the airport or they will insist that you wait for your next flight at the transit zone of Guangzhou airport. If you travel on a single ticket and if your stopover is relatively short, the chances that you will be allowed to exit the airport are quite slim.

Quite the contrary, if your transit time is a longer one, like more than 10 hours, your chances become much better. Also, if you are traveling on separate ticket, then they have to allow you to perform the immigration and to de facto enter China in order to make a check in and other procedures to catch for onward flight.

In reality, it is important to understand that 24 hour visa free transit does not necessarily imply the possibility to exit the airport like 144 hour visa free transit does. So, you and your family are basically in the same situation since you are all covered by 24 hour visa free transit.

In any case, if I were you, I would approach 24/144 hour visa free transit desk and apply, this is for free, for a temporary entry permit. The relevant offcial will check your documents and will decide if the permit will be granted. Hoepefully, it will be, especially if your stopover is during the night hours.
