About:240-Hour Visa-Free Transit in Guangdong

LAX-Guangzhou-Hongkong

If I fly from LAX to Guangzhou then take the train to Hongkong, will this qualify for 144-hour-visa free program? Is there an application online that we can complete in advance?

Well, you can take a flight from US to Guangzhou, but you should keep in mind that this flight should not have any additional landing within mainland China and also in Hong Kong since you intend to return back to Hong Kong.

Now something about a returning from a mainland China to Hong Kong...

You cannot take a train because it is not eligible since the through train using old route from Guangzhou East station to Hong Kong Hung Hom station is discontinued. Actual high speed trains that would be extremely convenient are definitely not eligible, so by far the best option is to take a direct ferry (catamaran) from Shekou port in Shenzhen to Hong Kong - Macau Ferry Terminal know also as Sheung Wan. You should buy your ferry (catamaran) ticket for this route in advance and print it out and have with you. This will be your proof that you will be in a real transit.

You should buy your Shekou to Hong Kong ferry (catamaran) ticket through CKS - Chu Kong Passenger Transport Company website.

If you do the things as explained, you will be definitely eligible for 144 hours visa free transit in the entire Guangdong province.

Currently train exit option is not eligible form of exit from Guangdong province (Guangzhou city included). It used to be when conventional through trains, departing from Guangzhou East (called also Tianhe) were running to Hung Hom station in Hong Kong. According to relevant sources, this train will not be used any more because it is replaced by faster and more convenient high speed trains. High speed trains are not eligible even if they depart from Guangzhou East.

It is possible to take a bus, but you should have in mind that it is necessary to book in advance a through bus that will travel all the way from Guangzhou to Hong Kong or better to say, you will have to have a through ticket that will show that you will go uninterruptedly from Guangzhou to Hong Kong.

Having all these details in mind I consider direct ferries from Shekou port in Shenzhen to be by far the best option for reaching both Hong Kong and/or Macau for 144 hours visa free transit scheme. It was successfully tested in pre-pandemic times and it appears to be a good solution even at the time being.

Thanks for your answers. So i got the ferry ticket for next week transfer . But the ticket confirmation - doesn't show my details, name, ID number - its just qr code, date , and destination. I wonder if that will be enough to show to the immigration for 144 hours? Would you know if recently someone tried this transfer and it worked?

Taking a ferry was, is and will probably remain the best option for a foreseeable future. There are several positive feedback in this regard and they show that ferry option is considered to be the best option in this regard. I don't doubt about that at all.

Hi, is the ferry only eligible from Shekou, SZ? I have been planning to take TurboJet from Zhuhai Jiuzhou Port to Hong Kong.
So my route is actually Seoul to Guangzhou (plane) and then from Zhuhai to Hongkong (ferry). Will I be eligble for the 144h visa-free transit?

Yes, as James has pointed out, you can really take a ferry from Zhuhai to Hong Kong, but you should have in mind that you have to book your ferry ticket before your departure from Seoul. Also, you have to print out that ticket and have the hard copy with you as a proof of your real transit itinerary. In the end, you really have to take exactly that ferry you have bought a ticket before your departure for China.
