About:72-Hour Visa-Free Transit

Qualify for 72 hour visa?

Will be flying from USA to Shanghai (for 2 nights), then to Phuket, Thailand for 9 days. Then, Hong Kong for 3 nights before heading back home to USA.

Do I still qualify for 72 hour visa in Shanghai? (since Hong Kong no visa is required). Thanks!

Yes, you do. Actually, your itinerary is eligible for 144 and not 72 hour visa free transit since just 144 hours applies in Shanghai. Also, this is not a visa, but just a visa free transit... So, no visa at all.

However, I have to emphasize the following:

- Your flight from US to Shanghai is not allowed to have any additional landing within mainland China
- Your flight from Shanghai to Phuket is not allowed to have any additional landing within mainland China

If your flights comply with the above mentioned criteria, you will enjoy 144 hours visa free transit in wider Shanghai area (Shanghai, Jiangsu and Zhejiang provinces).

Your transit back home via Hong Kong is, indeed, visa free...

Thanks so much! Yes, the layover from USA to Shanghai is not in mainland China. And the flight from Shanghai to Phuket is actually a non-stop flight.
