72/144 hr transit visa - US citizen traveling to Guangzhou from egypt

I am doing a multi city tour Starting from Boston and other cities and finally traveling from Cairo to Guangzhou and leaving Guangzhou with three days. Can i use the 72 hour/144 hour visa on arrival. How do I notify the airline.
