For Qi visas, do you have to live in spouses home town where she is registered?

Wife is from Suzhou in Jiangsu. We married in the US almost seven years ago and we have been living in Nanchong Sichuan all this time when I have an apartment. We have been stranded in the US for the past 21 months and I am trying to return to China as a retired person. I am now 63 and have been working in Sichuan, China since 2011. My college was not allowed to renew my contract, which ended last month (2021.8.31) because I am 63 and stranded abroad. What are my possible options?

Q1 or Q2 visa, but as of a few months ago China Embassy and consulates in the US were not issuing any.

You can check to see if that is still the case. If not, applying for a Q1/Q2 from a 3rd country where you might already have residency is possible. The difficulty is that coming from countries other than the US, visas are only issued if you can show proof of vaccination with a Chinese covid vaccine. US/UK/Russian etc vaccines are not accepted.

If you can wait until the end of 2021 or Chinese New Year travel will probably become much easier
