Mother being overly superstitious?

Hello,

I'm a water dog born Feb 4th 1983. At a young age my mother always says I will grow up to have good fortune, but so far I have not seen anything. Although I work very hard everything seems to be a struggle or an obstacle. Was my mother wrong for assuming such a thing for someone with my sign?
