My wife, Chinese national, is currently in Shanghai working at an international school. My son and I both have 10 yr. L-type visas that expire Nov 2028. Do we need to apply for a different type of visa before we leave the U.S. to join her? Or can we enter with our current visa and change to a different type of visa once we get into Shanghai in order to stay there with her?

You can either apply for a different type of visa or change it to another type after you get into Shanghai.
