There is an answer to your question on this page: answers.travelchinaguide.com/question/854263.htm
I have been living in China for years, but lately with a tourist visa, exiting and reentering every 60 days maximum. I entered China last on March 6. I can benefit from this automatic extension until July 4.
But you have to take note of these points:
1) A 60-day automatic extension is given one time only.
2) It is given only as long as the government doesn't say the 'Epidemic prevention and control period' (in Chinese 疫情防控期) is over. End of April, I called the Entry Exit Bureau to ask if I would get the automatic extension when my visa would end on May 5, and they told me they didn't know yet, and ask me to call again on April 28. Which I did, and they still couldn't say anything and told me to call on May 5. And today they told me yes, we were still in the 'Epidemic prevention and control period' and I had the extension. So keep this in mind.
3) At the end of this automatic 60-day extension, you need to go in person and ask for more, if you wish to do so. And well in advance, 7 workdays. And I was told today that, in case of refusal, you have to leave on the original day, they don't give extra short-duration visas as they used to do years ago (overstaying means being fined, that's another topic).
I haven't found much on the internet on the topic, actually only this site and another one I recommend: shanghaiexitentry.com/qna/
