About:Overstaying in China & Penalty

An American english teacher teacher in China is having trouble getting new visa.

Apparently the school he works for is being difficult.
And they want him to continue to teach online while the school is closed.
But his visa has expired, will he be fined or arrested?

Yes. Working in China without a work permit usually may result in detention, fines, or in rare cases, criminal charges. Staying in China without a valid residence permit will result in fines and detention plus deportation. However, there is currently a leniency period due to the coronavirus outbreak and during this period his penalties will be correspondingly reduced.
