About:How to Travel to China without a Visa

Any visa that allows for layovers

I am looking at a flight that is super cheap going from PVG to LAX but it has 2 stops in China. As a Canadian, Can I fly into PVG on a separate ticket and then jump onto a flight like this? I know with the 144 hour visa, that is not allowed as it is not directly to third country but wondering if the 24 hour or 72 hour would allow it.

You are allowed to do that, but you should also keep in mind that the countries or eligible territories before and after mainland China have to be different. Hypothetically speaking, if you intend to travel, for example:

Bangkok - Shanghai - Beijing - Los Angeles

And your total transit time, from your first landing in mainland China, in this case in Shanghai, until your final departure, in this case from Beijing, is less than 24 hours, you are perfectly allowed to do that regardless of the fact that your flight tickets and your airlines are not connected. It is important though that you print out your flight tickets with long flight number and to have those printouts with you.

In this case you will tell to the authorities in Bangkok that you will travel to Los Angeles via China using 24 hour visa free transit. You will present them your flight ticket printouts and after a check of your ticket, you will be allowed to board the plane.

Upon your arrival in China, you will declare the same thing and you will be allowed to proceed after you are granted a temporary entry permit by Chinese authorities.
