About:Chinese Permanent Residence Permit

63 year old foreigner already living in China - Residency options?

In March 2018 my wife purchased a home in Tongren, Guizhou province, using money I transferred to her bank account. She is now 31 years old and a teacher.

We have been together more than 3 years, although we have only been living together in our home less than 2 years, because earlier I worked in Australia. We were married in January 2019.

Do I qualify for any form of residency? At the moment I have a 2 year multiple entry visa (Q2) and use a business visa for short term work assignments in China.

Without any residency status I can't get a driving licence or bank account and employment is more complicated.

I read somewhere that 2 year residency permits are possible for people over 60. They can be renewed.

That is up to your municipal EEA. You should qualify for a family-based residence permit at this point but the validity depends on provincial regulation (it's usually between 1-2 years in Beijing and 2-5 years in Shanghai), although the residence permit does not permit employment and you will have to surrender all Chinese visas (including your business visa) in the process. For gainful employment the only way is a work-based residence permit.
