About:144-Hour Visa-Free Transit

Can an American with a misdemeanor DUI enter Shanghai on 144 hr visa?

I am traveling from New Zealand, home to LA, and want to visit a friend in Shanghai for a few days along the way. I understand the rules of where and when I gotta go/leave but I’m a little worried because I got a DUI recently. It was a misdemeanor and have not been convicted, so technically it’s only on my driving record. There isn’t any risk of being thrown in prison in China is there?

Chinese Immigration won't ask for DUIs 99.99% of the time so you should be fine. Generally, crimes like DUI committed outside that country is not under that country's jurisdiction and you can't be indicted for it if they allowed you to enter (however if you have another DUI while in China, then it is under Chinese jurisdiction and you will be given a 15-day detention and deported).

A sidenote: conviction for DUI automatically makes you inadmissible to Canada unless you are Canadian.
