144 hour visa

We are flying from the uk into shanghai via Dubai in feb we then transfer to a cruise ship and sail the following evening to japan. Can we apply online for 144 hour free transit visa before travel, are there any restrictions.

Michelle, the online application platform does not work well, so I don't advise you to apply for it online in advance. It's quite easy to get the 144h visa-free transit permit upon arrival.

Thanks for reply Betty, I’ve heard horror stories of people arriving in Shanghai only to be refused 144 hr entry when trying to enter on arrival, someone said refusal due to having Turkish stamp in passport, I’m concerned this could happen to us, we then miss our cruise and gave to fly back to uk.. can’t get hold of Chinese immigration to get clarification. I think I might have to get the extortionate visa as I don’t want my holiday spoiled 🙁
