About:72-Hour Visa-Free Transit

KUL-SHA-LAX

Hi,
my plan is fly Kuala Lumpur to Shanghai, stay for 144 hours then fly to Los Angeles with Sichuan Airlines as follow: PVG-CTU (layover 5 hours), then CTU-LAX via Jian (technical stop). Can I do this without visa?

No, unfortunately, you are not eligible for 144 hour visa free transit because your itinerary has two consecutive stops (Shanghai and Chengdu) within mainland China. When you travel on 144 hour visa free transit literally every stop counts regardless if its nature. It is allowed to have multiple stops within mainland China only if you travel on 24 hour visa free transit.

In other words, you will have to transit through China with 24 hour time frame or obtain a visa in advance. Of course, you can also alter your itinerary to fit within 144 hour visa free transit rules and that means a stop in only one transit area.
