About:144-Hour Visa-Free Transit

144 hour TWOV Qualification

We are UK nationals and UK passport holders. We will fly from Dublin to Shanghai (Pudong) via Dubai arriving 3pm on 11th February. We have a hotel reservation in Shanghai and we will then embark a cruiseship in Shanghai (Wusong) and sail to Japan on 15th February at 5pm.
Are we eligible for the 144 hour TWOV? Is TWOV applicable if you fly in and exit via cruise?
Our route meets the A - B - C criteria (UAE - China - Japan) but it has been suggested to me we would not qualify as we exit China via ship.
We also have a flight reservation to return to Dublin once the cruise has ended.

Ash, you are eligible for 144 hour visa free transit. Leaving China by cruise ship is definitely allowed and acceptable under 144 hour TWOV. Don't worry about that. You should just take care that your itinerary fulfills the following two conditions:

- Your flight from Dubai to Shanghai is not allowed to have any additional stop within mainland China
- Your cruise is not allowed to have its first port of call, immediately after Shanghai, in mainland China port

I assume that you are fulfilling the above mentioned conditions, but just for a case...

You will print out your flight and cruise tickets and bring them with you. They are necessary because the authorities in Dublin, but even more those in Dubai will want to see them.

Upon arrival in Shanghai, you will just proceed to 144 hour visa free transit counter where you will fill out a relevant form, get a sticker in your passport and be allowed to exit the airport. It is highly advisable to have a printed confirmation of your accommodation booking in Shanghai.

If your cruise terminates in Shanghai, you will be again eligible for visa free transit because it is allowed to arrive in Shanghai by ship and leave it by plane. If you are going directly from the cruise terminal to the airport, you will be eligible for 24 hour visa free transit and if you intend to stay in Shanghai a bit longer, than again for 144 hour visa free transit.

Many thanks for your reply.
Our travel plan fulfills the conditions:
- Your flight from Dubai to Shanghai is not allowed to have any additional stop within mainland China. - Our flight is direct from Dubai to Shanghai
- Your cruise is not allowed to have its first port of call, immediately after Shanghai, in mainland China port - Our first port of call is Okinawa, Japan

We will take extra copies of our hotel reservation in Shanghai and cruise tickets for inspection.
The cruise terminates in Dubai, we do not return to China.

We look forward to our first visit to China. Thank you again.
