Arriving in Shenzhen Shekou on a Cruise Ship

I am arriving in Shekou port on a cruise ship. I would like to get off the ship and travel to Hong Kong on the ferry. I would get back on the cruise ship when it docks in Hong Kong later than day.

Does anyone know if this is possible and if a visa is needed.
