About:144-Hour Visa-Free Transit

144 hour visa free transit.

I booked a return flight months ago from New York to Bangkok which has a stop in Shanghai. My plans have since changed and I will need to fly to Laos. I plan to fly on my original ticket from New York to Shanghai and then book a new ticket from Shanghai to Laos (save $). I arrive in Shanghai at 7:30PM on the 25th and my flight to Laos is at 12:00am on the 27th. I believe this qualifies for the 144 hour visa free transit, correct? I will book a nearby airport hotel for the evening. I realize I will not be able to get my luggage so I will be flying without. Do you foresee Shanghai immigration officials having any issues with this?

US - Shanghai - Laos is no problem as you qualify for the 144h twov.

But how will you get back to the US?
When you take a flight from Laos to Shanghai and check-in for your original flight fro mShanghai to NY, they won't let you board as you missed the second part of your flight to Bangkok before.
Your ticket will be invalid.

Sorry I did not make it so clear in the previous post. I already completed the first part of the ticket from Bangkok->Shanghai->New York in September. I meant that I when I go back in January on the first flight of the return ticket New York->Shanghai, I will buy a different ticket, different airline from Shanghai->Laos because I am not going to Bangkok. Much cheaper than having to switch my flight or buy a whole new ticket from USA->Laos.

That's fine if you can provide that ticket when clearing immigration instead of your ticket to Bangkok.

Just to clarify that you may want to book your Shanghai-Laos ticket in advance. As long as immigration has the right information when you enter they will not have a problem with you not going to BKK.
