If departing and returning to Hong Kong, you have two options:
- 30 day visa free access
- visa on arrival
30 day visa free access allows you visa free stay at Hainan island, but you will have to get a kind of invitation letter from an accredited agency and by far the best one is Hong Kong based China Travel Service (HK) Limited. Regardless of the fact that you will go through the agency, you are perfectly allowed to book your flight tickets and accommodation on Hainan by yourself. Of course, the agency will try to make the best for itself offering you as much as possible of different services. Anyway, you will bargain and take only those services that will be of real value to you like an airport transfer or some simple half day trip or similar. You will make a contact with the agency and shortly after, when you reach an agreement, you will be supplied with some kind of an invitation letter that will allow you to enter, stay and explore Hainan island visa free.
Visa on arrival is your other option. Here you don't need any agency, but you will do everything by yourself and you will also apply and obtain a Hainan visa on arrival upon your landing in Sanya. The price for UK citizen is 304 CNY and for Swedish citizen 168 CNY.
Now, you will calculate what is more economical for you, but you have to always have in mind that it is far more relaxing when you travel to mainland China, although it is Hainan, with some kind of document that secures you to be allowed to enter the country with the absolute peace of mind. This is the reason why do I personally always suggest 30 day visa free access over visa on arrival, although traveling on visa on arrival is definitely simpler.
