traveling to Beijing from usa then to Thailand

I am flying from us to beijing staying 2 days then flying to phuket thailand. aka on separate tickets. will this meet the 72 hour visa free transit requirements? I have booked a hotel for 2 nights. so i would not have to go to police station either right?
