My wife and I are due to visit Shanghai arriving on 11th February 2020 at 17.00 local time staying at the Guxiang Hotel for three nights and then joining the cruise liner MSC Splendida on 14th February 2020 staying in port overnight and leaving early evening on Saturday 15th to head to Japan arriving on17th. However our next stop is Hong Kong overnight before travelling on to ThailandI believe that there is a visa available for short stays under 144 hours which appears to be appropriate in our situation but I cannot find information as to how to apply for this type of visa. Can it be done online or do you have to visit a visa application centre. Our nearest would be Edinburgh.We both have full UK passports (machine readable) that do not expire until 2025.

It's not a visa.The 144h twov is a transit without any visa.If you travel UK - Shanghai - HK, you don't need a visa, you're covered by the 144h twov.At your arrival in Shanghai, just follow the signs 144h transit at the airport and have your documents ready.

I am really worried after reading recently in the daily mail about a couple who flew out to Shanghai to join a cruise ship were turned away and made to fly home next day as they did not have or apply for the correct documentation. Unfortunately they did not give full details of the reason for their rejection.

It's not a visa.
The 144h twov is a transit without any visa.
If you travel UK - Shanghai - HK, you don't need a visa, you're covered by the 144h twov.
At your arrival in Shanghai, just follow the signs "144h transit" at the airport and have your documents ready.
