Yes, you are eligible for 144 hour visa free transit, but your itinerary has to fulfill the following two conditions:
- Your cruise is not allowed to have its last port of call, immediately before Shanghai, in mainland China port.
- Your flight out of Shanghai to, I assume Canada, is not allowed to have any additional landing in mainland China and in the country where your cruise will have its last port of call, immediately before Shanghai.
If the above two conditions are fulfilled, you are definitely eligible for 144 hour visa free transit and you don't need any kind of visa. 144 hour visa free transit in Shanghai has replaced 72 hour visa free transit a couple of years ago.
You should bring a printouts of your flight and cruise tickets and a printout (confirmation) of your accommodation booking in Shanghai.
