About:240-hour Visa-free Transit in Shanghai, Zhejiang, and Jiangsu

US Citizen Traveling With Thai Wife Thru China to Thailand

I am traveling to Thailand together with my wife on December 21 with a 13-hour layover at Kunming airport on December 23. I will be flying home to the US separately on January 6 and going through the Shanghai airport with another 13-hour layover. My wife will be flying home to the US separately on January 13 through the Shanghai airport with a 13-hour layover. I am a natural born US citizen with a valid non-expiring US passport. My wife is a natural born Thai citizen with a valid non-expiring Thai passport and a US Green Card through marriage to me.

Thus, do either my wife or I need a visa for our layovers in Kunming or Shanghai? Also, are we able to stay in a local Kunming and Shanghai hotel without a visa? If either of us needs a visa, we will need to get in San Francisco as soon as possible. Thank you.

Your itinerary is definitely eligible for 24 hour visa free transit in both Kunming and Shanghai and you don't need any kind of visa.

You will print out your flight tickets and have those printouts with you. Also, you will declare at check-in in US that you will travel to Thailand via Kunming using 24 hour visa free transit. After a short inspection of your tickets, you will be allowed to board the plane.

Upon arrival in Kunming, you will approach 24 hour visa free transit counter where your will apply for a temporary entry permit to be allowed to exit the airport and to enter the country. You are advised to book an accommodation and to have a confirmation of such accommodation with you, ready to be presented to the immigration authorities. After your layover in Kunming, you will continue your journey to Thailand.

You will do exactly the same thing for your journey back to US.
