converting student visa to working visa

Is it possible to convert student visa to working visa without leaving China? If not, can one apply for a working visa without going to the home country, for example from Thailand or Nepal?

Yes, it's possible. After you get a job and collect all documents required, you can go to the local exit and entry administration to see if you can convert the student visa to a work visa. If it can't be done, you can go to Thailand to try your luck.
