About:China Transit Visa

Traveling to India through Shanghai

I'm a US citizen, will be traveling to India with a transfer for 9 and 15 hrs in Shanghai.

9hr on the way to India, and 15 hr on the way back to the US.
Do I need to get a visa or 24hr pass? Thank you!

You don’t need a visa for USA-Shanghai (24 hours)-India and the reverse routing. “24 pass” doesn’t exist. If you are referring to the temporary entry permit to enter China, this may or may not be granted. Having a long (overnight) connection with a confirmed hotel reservation would help.

all the transferes are during the day, I would arrive in 5am and leave at 3pm and at 10pm on the way back to the USA
Sounds like I should be able to walk the streets of Shanghai
