About:China Visa Renewal and Extension

i have x2 visa but need x1

i've been told that i can apply within china for my x1 but i've also been told i need to go abroad to somewhere like HK. i'm a US citizen and i am not sure what information is right. i thought i could go to the exit and entry office where i will be staying for the 4 year program but someone said that i can't since i have an x2 visa not a residence permit from an institution.

My advice is fisrt to try to get the X1 visa at the local exit and entry administration within China. If you fail, then go to HK or another country to do the application.
