X2 visa to X1 visa?

I am currently studying in Suzhou on an X2 visa. I will be going to Nanjing University this September for an entire year. The visa application center in Hong Kong has just rejected me, stating that I cannot apply for an X1 visa while inside of mainland China and must leave the mainland in order to even apply.

My question is: Is it possible to convert an X2 visa into an X1 visa/ residency permit?

I’m afraid you cannot, Payne. You can only apply for an extension of your visa, but the additional days you can stay will not exceed the “Duration” on your X2 visa. I think you have to go to your home country to apply for a long-term X1 visa for your 1-year study.
