About:Visa on Arrival

Transit via Beijing and Shenzhen

I am travelling from Paris to Cairns via both Beijing and Shenzhen. I land in Beijing at 06:00 and fly out of Shenzhen at 23:00 on the same day, so will be in China for less than 24 hours.

The official advice says "Passengers with a confirmed onward air, cruise or train ticket to a third country within 24 hours can obtain an entry permit on arrival. They must have documents required for the next destination. When passengers have obtained an entry permit, they can have multiple transit stops within China (People's Rep.). This TWOV facility does not apply at Shenzhen (SZX) when passengers are traveling to Hong Kong (SAR China) or Macao (SAR China)." It goes on to say that "For TWOV through Dalian (DLC) or Shenzhen (SZX): before departure, a notification must be sent by the carrier to immigration."

Is it possible for me to make my transit without a visa if I ask my carrier to provide prior notification?

Part one:

Stefanie, your itinerary is definitely eligible for 24 hour visa free transit and you don't need any kind of visa and you don't need to ask your carrier to make a notification because the notification will be automatically sent because China is among so called API countries that already know that you will arrive there at the very moment of your check-in.

You should just print out your flight tickets and have those printouts with you. Also, you will declare at check-in in Paris that you will travel to Cairns via China using 24 hour visa free transit. After a short inspection of your tickets, you will be allowed to board the plane.

Upon arrival in Beijing, you will approach 24 hour visa free transit counter where you will apply for free for a temporary entry permit that will allow you to exit the airport and/or to perform the formalities of collecting your luggage and similar. Also, the next segment of your flight will be a domestic one, so this permit is essential for the continuation of your journey.

Part two:

When you are granted a permit, everything else is very simple. If you have a longer layover, you can make a short stroll in the city and after that you will wait for your flight at the boarding gate. Upon arrival in Shenzhen, you will have just exit formalities and soon you will be in your plane for Cairns.

Now, the most important detail is to find out whether you are flying on a single (through) or separate tickets. I assume that you are flying on separate tickets and if this is the case, you will have to collect your luggage and perform a recheck in Beijing or Shenzhen or maybe in both places. OK, this is the detail, you know the best.

Just be relaxed because you have created an itinerary that is fine and you should do just as the above mentioned. Nothing more than that, having in mind the detail regarding your luggage.
