No, unfortunately. To be allowed for any kind of visa free transit in Guangdong province when you depart from either Hong Kong or Macau, you have to fly to Guangzhou or to Jieyang Chaoshan airport.

Anyway, you can accomplish your intended itinerary by relying on a 5 day Shenzhen VOA. You cannot take a train directly to Shenzhen, but you can reach Lo Wu border crossing by train. You will clear Hong Kong immigration here and proceed to the mainland Chinese crossing called Luohu where you will apply for a 5 day Shenzhen VOA at the price of 304 CNY for UK citizens. After that, you will proceed by metro to the center of Shenzhen. After you have explored Shenzhen, you will easily take a ferry from Shenzhen Shekou ferry terminal to Macau.
