120-day stay is only authorized on a Q2 visa which requires you to have a Chinese-national relative. It can go back to sharing the same great-grandparent but you will have to dig out a family tree to prove whoever is inviting you is related to you.

I am flying to Shanghai on 10th March, tour for total of 12 day. Fly to other countries and stop over in Shanghai on the way back to Canada on 16th June. (which is more than 90 days) I would like to stay for a few days in China. Your advice please. Thanks

If you have a Chinese national relative then it's definitely easier to go through the Q2 route as all you need is your relative's invitation letter and proof of kinship, plus the longer duration of stay is a bonus. If you do not then the only way is the L route which means you need to have travel arrangements sorted out (most people will just book then cancel though).
