About:72-Hour Visa-Free Transit

I have a friend just left NY to Jakarta on one airline with 12 hour stopover in Shanghai.

I have a friend just left NY to Jakarta on one airline with 12 hour stopover in Shanghai. He was not allowed to get out of the airport for short sightseeing. He has print out of all his tickets. What did he do wrong?

I have the same itinerary for January 1, 2020 but with 23 hours layover arriving in Shanghai 5pm. It will be a nightmare if we have to stay sleep in the airport for 23 hours. Please, advise.

Since at least February 2018 immigration will need to see a hotel reservation and it doesn't sound like your friend had one. To avoid this, simply make a hotel reservation to satisfy this requirement (yes, it is not listed officially and a lot of people have been feeling the pain lately).

Its up to immigration discretion if one can leave the airport during 24 hour visa free transit. Shanghai is pretty strict. If you don't have overnight stop w/ hotel and print out of confirmation. I'm sure you will be fine if you go the hotel route.
