About:Chinese Temporary Residence Permit

Can I apply for a Temporary Residence Permit on an L Visa?

I currently have an 10-year multi-entry L (Tourist) Visa to China, but have been considering moving there for work. Can I enter China on the L visa and apply for the Temporary Residence Permit while I am there? Or would I need to apply for a separate Z (or other) visa outside of China before entering?

Generally no. Employer petition must first be approved by the provincial labor department and that can take quite a while, and even after approval the EEA will probably ask you to comeback on a Z visa to issue the residence permit.
