About:24-Hour Visa-Free Transit

Visa for Round trip flight

If I fly from the US to either Shanghai or Beijing and then fly back to the US via Japan, does that count as COuntry A to Country C?

Under any circumstances, can you stay in China for a weekend using a Round Trip ticket to/from the US?

Thank you and if the flight itin is:

Denver to San Francisco to Shanghai on 16 Nov then Shanghai to Tokyo to Denver on 19 Nov, does that qualify or is the end destination a factor (Denver after Tokyo)

Yes, your itinerary:

US - Beijing or Shanghai - Japan - US or wherever you want

Is definitely eligible for 144 hour visa free transit and you don't need any kind of visa. This is a good example of:

A (US) - B (China) - C (Japan)

As far as your second question is concerned, I have to admit that I don't understand it. Do you mean the simple round trip ticket without the C country involved or with C country involved? If you think about a direct (nonstop) flights US - China - US, then you will need a visa obtained in advance.

That definitely qualifies for 144 hour visa free transit. In reality, this is so simple: The only thing that matters are your immediate points to your Chinese destination and they have to be in different countries. As you can see, the immediate points to your Chinese destination are San Francisco (US) and Tokyo (Japan). Everything before San Francisco and everything after Tokyo is not of interest for Chinese immigration authorities at all.
