About:240-Hour Visa-Free Transit

Round trip question

Hi, I have already booked a round trip from JFK to PVG arriving on May 15 with a few hour lay over in HND and then on May 24 leave from PEK to JFK with short lay over in HND. It seems like my tourist visa will not get approved in time.

If I were to book another trip adding a day in Hong Kong by leaving from PVG to HKG on May 18th and then HKG to PEK on May 19 would my trip be eligible for TWOV? How long do I need to be out of China for? Could I just stay in HKG for a few hours and then fly back to PEK? Will my 240 hours reset after traveling back from HKG to PEK? I have already booked on a return flight to the JFK from PEK and simply adding (after I already booked my round trip) a leg to HKG, will this affect my eligibility?

Brandon, your idea to book a trip to Hong Kong is the best way to enjoy 240 hour visa free transit. Your original, round trip, alone would not be eligible because both of your immediate points are located in just one country - Japan. When you buy and use your separate trip to Hong Kong, your entire itinerary will be:

US - Japan - mainland China - Hong Kong - mainland China - Japan - US.

This is perfect and definitely eligible for 240 hour visa free transit - twice. You should have in mind that you will have to buy your round trip to Hong Kong in advance, even before you depart from US toward China because you will be asked to present it in both US at the time of your check-in and upon your landing in Shanghai. Now, about your questions:

If you buy your additional trip to Hong Kong, your entire journey becomes eligible for 240 hour visa free transit - twice - definitely. You can just enter Hong Kong and return to mainland China just after a couple of hours. Please, just allow enough time between them in order to be able to perform the entry any exit formalities in Hong Kong. If you stay for a night, even better, but definitely not necessary. Your first 240 hour visa free transit expires ans resets at the moment when you board Hong Kong bound flight. You have every right to enjoy the second, brand new 240 hour visa free transit as soon as you return back to mainland China. Your already booked ticket will not affect your eligibility because of the Hong Kong bound ticket that you will buy at the later stage (that for Hong Kong) because it is not a ticket that is essential, but your itinerary that has to have its immediate points before and after mainland China in two different countries or eligible territories (eligible territories are Hong Kong, Taiwan and Macau). In other words, instead of Hong Kong you can also use Taiwan or Macau, based on the price of the round trip ticket. Have a nice visit to China.
