About:144-Hour Visa-Free Transit

144 hr Visa

Arriving in Shanghai in March 2020 on an overnight stop on cruise ship ( no other China stops) I am led to believe that I NEED to take an organised tour either through the ship or from a local source to enable me to come ashore an take advantage of the 144 hr visa rule, cruise company says this is the ruling.. Please can you confirm.

You should not need a visa and can visit without a guide by getting an entry permit (a visa waiver) at immigration. They may ask for proof of accomodation in Shanghai.
