About:240-Hour Visa-Free Transit

SHANGHAI TRAIN | ENTRY PORT

Hi there,

I will do Tashkent-Beijing-Hong Kong (all flights) and make use of the 144hour visa free transit.

However, and after visiting HK, my plan is to return to mainland China by train, all the way up to Shanghai, and then leave by plane to Tokyo.

Am I eligible to yet another visa-free transit upon arriving in Shanghai? And if that's the case, is there any particular train or station I should be looking for?

You are eligible only when traveling on the overnight direct train (Z99/Z100). The train is called Shanghai-Kowloon through train and leaves from Hung Hom station in Hong Kong.

Z100B slow train leaving every other day from Hung Hom is the only one eligible for visa free transit in Shanghai

Yes, you are perfectly allowed to do that.

Your itinerary:

Tashkent - Beijing - Hong Kong is definitely eligible for 144 hour visa free transit, but you should be aware that you are not allowed to have any additional landing within mainland China. I mention this detail intentionally because sometimes the airlines are offering a cheaper flights via Urumqi.

As far as you second itinerary is concerned:

Hong Kong - Shanghai - Tokyo

You are also perfectly eligible for 144 hour visa free transit if using a train, but you have to take only a through train departing every other day from Hong Kong Hung Hom railway station and arriving at Shanghai railway station (上海火车站).

By the way, you are also allowed to take a train from Beijing to Hong Kong, if you want, but it has to be again a through train departing from Beijing West railway station (北京西站) to Hong Kong Hung Hom railway station every other day.
